Green Globe 21

Xel-Ha Natural Wonder blue conscience for global well-being

Working towards Green Globe 21 Certification

Xel-Ha Natural Wonder is the first park in Mexico to apply for the Green Globe 21 certification process, which aims to face environmental challenges, social and cultural aspects, and make the benefits of tourism reach local communities. The sustainability upon which Green Globe is founded resides in a simple concept: To preserve resources for future generations.

While sharing a magical, unique, invaluable, and unforgettable experience with visitors at our Natural Wonder, it is Xel-Ha’s priority to preserve this place for future generations, committing to carry out Green Globe’s environmental regulations and sustainability indicators.

Xel-Ha carries out programs to:
Recycle water through treatment plants, which can manage up to 147,000 litres of water a day.

  • Reduce greenhouse gases, using alternative energy sources such as solar heaters in food preparation.

  • Preserve natural resources, monitoring local flora and fauna. Population studies of endangered species are carried out, as well as the rescue of plants in areas suffering disturbances.

  • Manage waste and promote recycling awareness. Xel-Ha’s Waste Recollection and Transfer Centre has been able to channel 70% of waste matter to recycling plants.

  • Carry out management plans for our exhibited fauna (birds and manatees).

  • Fulfil contingency plans aimed at preventing negative impact upon the environment.

  • Promote social wellbeing in nearby communities surrounding Xel-Ha; in Chemuyil, educational labour, alphabetisation, open primary and secondary school, talks concerning social issues, and cultural events, among other activities, are regularly carried out.

  • Guarantee permanent employment to over 500 collaborators, mostly from local communities, therefore benefiting the region’s social and economic growth.

  • Encourage economic development within the region through programs to aid local suppliers

  • Promote regional traditions, such as meliponine apiculture and the Hanal Pixan celebration (Day of the Dead).
