Mangrove vegetation is remarkable for its uncanny versatility in the harsh conditions and high salt content of locations close to the sea. While the Xel-Ha River provides a steady flow of freshwater, these mangrove communities, also known as mangals, must cope with such factors as low oxygen levels, scarce nutrients, high tides, as well as regulating salt intake. Their capacity to adapt has given them their whimsical designs, wonderful to view from above, and bewitching to behold underwater.
A fine perspective of this mangrove forest can be reached on a brief detour from the footpath towards the River, leading to a small platform engulfed in this marvelously adaptive vegetation.
